How To Be Healthy and Productive
While Working Remotely
Working from home can either be a blessing or a curse. On the one hand, it’s nice to skip out on the commute, on the other hand, there may be more distractions at home than there are at the office. Here are some ways to help you succeed as you work from home:
-
Stick to your normal routine:
Although tempting, rolling out of bed and working in your pajamas is not going to do you any favors. Set an alarm and get ready as you would any other work day. You will feel more productive and focused. Schedule your tasks and meetings throughout the day as you normally would so you’re not tempted to end the day early.
-
Set boundaries with others:
Determine what potential distractions you will face as you work from home and prepare accordingly. If you have kids or family members who are also home, be sure to set boundaries of when they can and cannot interrupt you. Set boundaries for yourself, too. Work the hours you would typically work, not just any hour of the day or night.
-
Create a dedicated workstation:
Sure, it would be nice to work from the comfort of your bed, but you won’t accomplish much. Set up a dedicated workstation and use it consistently. This way, your mind switches to work mode as soon as you enter that space. To take your workstation to the next level, get a standing desk, a treadmill desk or bike desk so you can move while you work - a proven way to keep you productive throughout the day.
-
Take a proper lunch break:
Now that you’re working so close to your kitchen, it’s easy to snack all day. But set limits for yourself and take a proper lunch break, instead of eating at your computer. You will be motivated to work until lunch and be energized to finish out the day afterward.
-
Move throughout the day:
On top of a lunch break, be sure you’re giving yourself a few breaks throughout the day to stretch or go on a walk. If you don’t feel like you have enough time for a walk around the block, a treadmill desk allows you to walk while you work. If you have a standing desk, using a balance board is another great way to get your body moving and burning additional calories while at work - Win-Win!
-
Invest where it matters:
One of the benefits of working from home is the fact that you can create a workspace that fits your needs. If you have back problems, consider investing in an ergonomic chair or treadmill desk. Blue light glasses are a great option if your eyes get strained from looking at a computer screen all day. Create an atmosphere you actually enjoy being in with homey touches like an essential oil diffuser, a candle, or your favorite plant. Customizing your space is one of the best things about working from home.
-
Don’t let your health take a backseat:
There’s something about working from home that throws us out of routine. But don’t let this change negatively affect your health. Get a proper amount of sleep, drink water, and eat mindfully. Exercising is helpful in keeping you focused during work too. Consider setting up a home gym for ease and convenience. Having equipment like a rower or a treadmill in your home makes it easy to get a workout in before the day is over, just jump on during lunch for a quick pick-me-up, or end your day with a solid workout before the family routine sets in.
-
Working from home with kids:
You may also be homeschooling your kids during this time and finding it difficult to keep them on task. Active workstations like bike desks are great for kids because they can get their energy out while they complete their work. Plus the movement increases blood flow to the brain which promotes creativity and retention of information.
Working from home can make it difficult, but these tips will help you to focus and stay sane. The ability to work from home is an opportunity not everyone is lucky enough to have, so make the most of it!
